Left of Centre Challenge # 78

This week at Left of Centre Challenges (LOC) its all about 'Distress It' and the sponsor is Bugaboo.

Would you go into the Woods to play with such sad looking skulls?

Instructions
1. Using chalk pastels create a background with yellows and oranges.
2. Print image onto background and attach lots of google eyes.
3. Knock back/distress the colour by applying 'Antique Linen' distress ink across the whole piece.
4. Repeat with blues and purples to create a 'frame', then crinkle frame to distress further.
5. Distress the edges with scissors, highlight with 'Vintage Photo' distress ink.
6. Mount main image onto frame.
7. Print out word banner into white paper, distress with 'Antique Linen', crumple and highlight with 'Vintage Photo', attach to piece to finish.

Left of Centre Challenge #74

Left of Centre Challenge this week is to create a TAG or an ATC. The sponsor is Smeared Ink.  I love the Toxic Ballerina range.

Instructions

1. Cut tag from a piece of old card.

2. Paint yellow.

3. Stencil with deeper yellow paint and  damask stencil.

4. Cut a strip if blue card and punch border and attach, using same blue card punch out some blue diamonds and attach.

5. Stencil with blue ink and a splatter stencil.

6. I printed out the image and used chalk pastels for colouring.  Cut out and attach with foam dots.

7. Ink the edges in blue.

8. Print out and attach the quotes ( I made this one up).

Left of Centre Challenge this week is MONOCHROME and the sponsor is IKES ART.

The WIND

Instructions for my journal page

1. Cover card stock with old book pages

2. Stencil (Brocade) in dark blue ink (this is my stencil of the moment!)

3. Using chalk pastels blend several shades of blue to cover the page to your liking. Spray with a fixative ( I use hairspray).

4. Stencil the swirls in a powder blue paint.

5. EMBOSSED IMAGE: Print out the image onto light blue flecked card. I used a non permanent pen to draw over the lines and then embossed with a pearlised blue embossing powder.   I did this in several stages as I wasn't sure how long the ink would stay sticky. (I've lost my embossing pen!). Cut out and attach to page with sticky foam pads.

6. Print out the words and attach to page.

Left of Centre (LOC) #68

This week at Left of Centre Challenge blog the digital stamp sponsor is Dilly Beans. My DT entry uses digital stamp no. 566 Jenn's Heart Framed.  She looked so lost and lonely so I've tried to create a lost and forgotten scrapbook page of a now long forgotten love, I think I'm in a valentines day time warp!

You said you'd love me forever!

The background:  I've used a selection of old scrapbook pages and aged them with distress ink; Vintage Photo and Walnut Ink.  I glued down someold grey embroidery thread for the circle and distressed a chipboard heart from a Heidi Swapp kit. The chipboard letter 'u' was inked with black stazon. LO SIZE 8X8.

The digital stamp: I've coloured the hearts, hair and dress with highlighters and then smooched Walnut distress ink over the whole piece. Attached a button, google eye and an old popper over the eye areas and finally redefined the frame with a permanent pen marker.

Once the piece was assembled I splattered on some brown ink.

I'm really starting to enjoy my experimenting with digital stamps, you play you learn.

Left of Centre (LOC) Challenge #66

This week at the Left of Centre Challenge blog, I had the opportunity to play with a digital stamp from The East Wind, this weeks sponsor.  I selected one from the Twisted Venus range.  She is such a cheeky rascal.

The Temptress Tarot Card

1. The words are cut out using the sizzix spooktacular alphabet die..

2. Pan Pastels were used to colour the background.

3. BIC Mark-it pens and chalk pastels were used to colour the stamp.

Its simple but I think effective.

Then the idea of a WANTED poster came to mind, I just couldn't resist doing a second project!

1. I took a piece of beige card and coloured it with some Antique Linen Distressed Ink.

2. Using paint and powerpoint software I played around with the design and the text underneath the image.

3. I cut out the title using the sizzix spooktacular alphabet die.

4. Once printed I scrunched up the paper and applied more Antique Linen Distress Ink and then lightlyhighlighted with Walnut Ink Distress Ink.

I'm still learning how to play with digital stamps, so projects are more successful than others, but if you don't try you don't learn.

Voodoo U Love

Happy Valentines my lovely scissorettes. My offering today is an altered chocolate box. Well chocolates are a gift of love are they not?

Voodoo U Love?

It all started with a box of chocolates and a bit of paper mache....

Altered Box
1. Remove lid, cover box in a layer of old book pages to give stability to the box - will be covered so any paper will do, leave to dry.
2. Take some black tissue paper, scrunch up well and glue to box, ensuring the inside, sides and outside edges are all covered.  The tissue paper layer should be very crinkly.  Leave to dry.
3. Use treasure gold to highlight all those gorgeous wrinkles.
The Heart
1. I've used funky foam and cut out 4 hearts each one increasing with size. Using the hot glue gun I attached all the layers and used the hot glue to try and smooth between the ridges created. Sorry I forgot go take pictures at this stage.  Leave to cool down.
2. Cover the heart with a few layers of old book pages - again this layer wont be fully visable later, adding scrunched up red tissue as the final layer. Leave to dry.
3. The heart was a bit bright so I slapped on some red craft paint, I'm loving the DecoArt Crafters Acrylic in Rouge Noel, but any red paint will do. Leave to dry.
4. I then smooched over some distress ink in Walnut ink,  to dull/age it a bit more.  Then swiped over some treasure gold just to lighly highlight a few areas. 
5. Attach heart inside of box with hot glue and pierce heart with 5 long pins, I think these are for jewellery making and enjoy your masterpiece.

LOC Weekly Challenge

NOTE: I really struggle to get the skin tone right, it usually looks like a really bad fake tan, 

so this time around I've used my chalk pastels in a rose pink and a taupe brown

and once applied I use a rubber to remove the intensity of colour until I'm happy with it.

Its fair to say I need more practice but I'll get there!!

Not sure this more CAS (clean and simple) look really works for me but its good to try

new styles, isn't it?

LOC Weekly Challenge

Happy New Year to you all.  We start this year off with a couple of pieces for the Left Of Centre (LOC) challenge.  This week they are showcasing digi stamps by Ikesart, I picked this grumpy looking TROLL to work with.  I'm still perfecting the art of working with digi stamps, however, what I do like is that you can flip them and re size them to suit, which I did for my first piece.

Instructions

1. Take an old piece of card and cover with old book pages of your choce, I stuck these down with a regular glue stick.

2. Slap on lots of red, orange and pink acrylic paint, when dry, slap on some bronze paint.  I used an old credit card to smoosh the paint around.

3. Using a crackle stamp and archival ink, stamp randomly over the bacground to mess it up a bit.  

4. Cut out a scallop edge along the bottom, and ink up all the edges.

TROLL and Window

5. Resize Troll image to preferred size and print out.  Then colour as desired.  I used some old shimmer chalks and a black permanent pen to define some of the outlines etc.

6. Measure Troll and cut a smaller piece of card to fit the Troll.  Cover the card in black crumpled tissue paper and over stamp with crackle stamp amd bronze ink.

7. Attach Troll to this background.

8. Decide where you wish to place the window, measure and cut the window from the base.  Using old grey embroidery thread, or something similar (garden wire would work too) make the bars glueing them to the back of the base card.

9. Attach the Troll behind the bars.

10. Print out your chosen quote, cut out and randomly stamp with black archival ink and a splatter stamp to grundge up the words, glue in place.  I also used a scrap piece of card, wrote on the month and year, grundged up the card before glueing in place.

My next wee project was to have a game of Exquisite Corpse using just his head. 

1. I googled Prince Charming and used those images as a basis for chest. I used felt pens to colour.

2. The Ballerina section was made up of layers of tissue paper.

3. The feet are from a Gremlin digi stamp FWIVER which I cut out and tweaked to fit.

4. I made a mask of the full image and then coloured the background with my trust chalk pastels then overstaped with silver in and a crackle stamp.  

NOTE: If I was to do this again  I'd create the background seperately and cut out each part and glue in place!!

Left Of Center Challenge #58

The Theme is : Anything Goes (Dark).  As you all know I am very fond of the odd skull lurking around and since discovering the long lost word KTENOLOGY (The science of putting people to death)  I have taken it upon myself to explore this theme frequently.  Here is the latest addition to my collection.

I also have a love of making up lots of collaged backgrounds for whenever they may be needed, this piece uses one such piece cut to A5, I gessoed the base then slapped on lots of red and orange acrylic paint.  Once dry I smudged on lots of Antique Photo Distress Ink to knock back the colour.  I then stencilled the skull followed by the drops, drips and splatters with black archival ink.  Using the black ink and a costmetic sponge (yes, it does make a difference what sponge you use!) I distressed around the edges before adding the goblet and words.  I used silver paint, cream acrylic, black permanent pen and red glitter glue for the goblet.  The letters were cut out of scraps of black card. 

Other Materials used:

2. TCW : Mini Confetti (the background splodges and splashes)

3. istencils: not sure of its name but its the long drops from the top.

Stamp (Digital)

The GOBLET from LOC (Left of Centre), and was the starting point for this idea.

Skullflakes

Good Morning peeps. Today we have some sparkly skull flakes!!  Skull flakes I hear you say, that must be a typo Lou, surely?  Well folks, this is the Weird Scissors after all!!

1. Prep: Using a chocolate mould and air dry clay make up lots of skulls.  I usually make the skulls at least 1 week ahead of time, they can take ages to dry.

2. Cut out lots of snowflakes (Sizzix die) from mountboard, it has to be sturdy enough to take the weight of the skulls.

3. Paint the skulls and the snowflakes with white gesso and pale lilac paint, when dry slap on some sparkle.

4. Make a small hole in one of the 'arms' of a flake and attach a jump ring for hanging.

5. Using a hot glue gun, attach the skulls to the snowflakes.

6. Glue gems into the eye sockets.  

7. When dry hang up and enjoy.

I wonder what my guests will think of these or if they will even notice!

Eye Baubles

WOW what an awesome project, thanks for sharing Jas.

Introducing the EYE Baubles. (Yes, eyeballs rock!!)

1. Cut out lots of Christmas baubles (Sizzix Die) from mount board.  

2. I painted both sides with white gesso, then painted with an irridesent white paint. 

The hangers where painted with gesso and then several layers of gold paint.

3. Using a permanent red pen, scribble on the blood shot veins.

4. Using scraps of my hand made tissue fabric (instructions can be found HERE) 

and black card cut out circles and attach.

5. Decorate the eyes with glitter, well it is Christmas after all!!

Next step is to try and make 3D Eye Baubles.  I'll let you know

if I'm successful!!

31 Garden of Hedes

WOW, can you believe we are at 31st October already!!  Happy Halloween.

Jas, I so remember the bent spoons from my Dad trying to 'carve' out a turnip, he always did an amazing job.  Pumpkin carving is so much fun and the design options are endless. Thanks Jas.

What an exciting month its been.  I would like to thank Bex and Jas for joining me on this adventure of creativity and for all their fabulous and inspiring projects.  I have loved every single one of them.

Todays project, well this is the idea that set off the whole Weird Scissors concept of 31 Days of Halloween.  I was sitting on the bus and saw a really cool window display and thought, if only those flowers where skulls, it would be super cool.

Garden of Hedes

Project Preparation

1. Using air dry clay and some skull chocolate molds make up some skulls ( I made 12).

2. Take some old bandage gauze and wet it and colour with alcohol inks to give desired colour.  I rinsed lightly in water to 'dull' the colour.  When dry cut into 8 - 10 pieces, rough rectangles.

Supplies & Instructions

1. Take 1 30cm x 40cm canvas and dribble some deep purple ink from the top, leave to dry.

2. Once dry, slap on a layer of  white gesso, this dulls down the purple drips a bit.

3. Using chalk pastels blend purples and greens to give desired look.

4. Set the pastels, I use Silvikrin hairspary.

5. I found an old thorny rose stamp and stamped it randomly around the canvas with black archival ink.

6. Take the bits of coloured gauze and pull and distress the pieces, and attch to canvas with white craft glue.

7. I painted the skulls with a watered down cream and using the Kaisercraft stamp crackle  and Foggy London ink, 'distressed' the skulls.  I've glued some crystals in the eye sockets, (I just love a bit of bling) then applied the skulls with a hot glue gun.

8. To finsh off I inked around the edges with a black ink.

28 Witch Wares

Thanks to Virginia for her fabulous post on creating Mail Art, love the idea of giving it away for free. I'm adding a Gelli Plate to my wishlist as those backgrounds are gorgeous.

Todays post is very picture light, I was so engrossed in the 'playing' I forgot to pick up my camera and record the progress.

1. Cover chipboard with a suitable background paper, I printed these free bookcase images from the internet, to age it I swiped Antique Linen distress ink over the whole image.

2. The shelf was made by painting a scrap piece of card dark brown and dry brushing over some copper paint. It was attached with hot glue along with the skulls for support.  

3. The witches hats are little works of origami, instructions HERE , the eyeballs were secured with hot glue.

4.  I attached 3 brass paper fasteners (brads) and hung some worry dolls which I found in my junk box.

5.  The pumpkins were cut from old halloween straws and secured with hot glue.

6.  You can't see it really clearly but the brooms are hanging from a pair of dolls arms leftover from my 'Learner' project (just need to work out what to do with the torso!).  The arms were cut to size, attach to the background with hot glue.

7. To finish off the piece I've added a black sizzix scaredy cat, a red spider and some fake spider web.

Witch Wares is the final piece for my Witch Triptych, along with Learner and Winifred.

25 Learner!

While browsing around the web, as we do, I stumbled across THIS full sized project of a Glam Witch Crashed into a door.  Using the instructions given I miniaturised the project.

Material Used

1. Chipboard decorated as a brick wall

2. 2 Plastic cups, covered in like green tissue paper and a cross cut into the base so the broom handle can poke through.

3. 2 Barbie doll legs, painted in gesso, then covered in strips of black tape

4. A small craft broom, I replaced the broom handlewith a longer bit of stick

5. 2 rectangles of tissue paper stitched and gasthered at one end; this is the bloomers

6. Using the shoes which came with the doll, I painted them with black gesso and covered in purple glitter.

7. Lots of black tissue for the skirt.

8. Lots of hot glue for securing everything.

Its then just an assembly job with lots of hot glue to attach the witch to the brick wall.

I did add in an "L" plate!!

22 Steampunk Pumpkin and Giveaway Wednesday

A big thank you to our guest designer Virginia for her fabulous post yesterday, there are so many things to do, so little time.....

I found these little babies and fell in love!!  

Take a cheap plastic pumpkin bucket and Steampunkify it!

Material Used

Cheap Plastic Pumpkin Bucket.

Black Plastikote Spray

Treasure Gold Wax

Garden Mesh (mouth)

Sink Cover and Crystal Door Handle (left eye as you face him)

Black Buckle, washer, plaster mesh and a brad (right eye as you face him)

Old Screw (nose)

2 bendy metal bits from an old folder

2 rusty washers

Hot Glue Gun

This feels like a really lazy post, cos after I made my Steampunk Pumpkin 

I found these INSTRUCTIONS  and I don't think I can top it.  

I did have a few problems....

1. I tried to alter mini pumpkins, way too fiddly and they couldn't take the weight of the additions on the face and kept toppling over.  Mini steampunk pumpkins abandoned.

2. I tried covering the pumpkin in a layer of black gesso, it just kept flaking off, so back to the drawing board.

3. Next I tried my homemade black chalk paint, it looked amazing, the texture was fab, but it just peeled away like a face mask!!

4. Final attempt, black spray paint, its still not perfect as every knock and scratch shows up but it works well with the Treasure Gold Wax.

A couple of other points

1. Its a bit fiddly adding mesh over the mouth, much patience needed but well worth it!!

2. I used a hot glue gun, a few burnt fingers, so handle with care.

16 From Junk to Junque

WOW what fabulous Junk Keys from Jas yesterday, I'm intrigued, I wonder why she wants us to hang on to our plastic bottles!!

Day 4 I showcased my Junque Journal covers, and heres a few pages to add to my Halloween JJ.  Stencilling seems to be the technique of the day!!

1. As Darkness Descends

Take an old A4 folder and cut pages to desired size and cover in scraps of paper.

Slap on lots of red acrylic paint, and while wet sponge over some cheap gold paint.

Leave to dry.

Using the Andy Skinner Skullduggery stencil, a sponge and black gesso work the design onto the page.

Leave to dry.

Using The Crafters Workshop 6x6 confetti stencil, repeat the process used with the skull stencil until you are happy with the finished look.

Leave to dry.

Run black gesso around the edges.

2. Beware The Magic

Take an old A4 folder and cut pages to desired size and cover in scraps of paper.

Slap on a layer of white gesso mixed with cream/fawn acrylic paint.

Leave to dry.

Cut out a sizzix gingerbread man and use as a mask.  

Slap on and blend lots of aubergine, terracotta and purple acrlyic paint and while wet sponge over some cheap bronze paint, this creates the background.

Leave to dry.

Using the stencil part of the die cut draw around the gingerbread man to define the edges and with the stencil in place stamp over the gingerbread man image with vintage photo distress ink and the kaiercraft Sketchy stamp.

Punch a small heart out of red card and attach with glue.

Using a permanent marker draw on the stitch marks, mouth and eyes.

Using the sizzix Spooktacular alphabet die cut out your words and attach with glue.

The word "The" was made using my Dymo.

I  do have a slight fasination with Voodoo Dolls!

WICKED

Take an old A4 folder and cut pages to desired size and slap on a layer of white gesso.

Blend a mix of blue and purple chalk pastels to colour the background. 

I use hairspray to 'fix' the chalk pastels.  

Leave to dry.

Use The Crafters Workshop 6x6 confetti stencil with white gesso  and silver glitter glue and 

 Jas's fabby splatter technique from a few days ago, splatter white gesso over the background.

Make your own witches hat stencil and stencil with black gesso.

Stencil the word "WICKED" (from the Tim Holtz Halloween Stencil THS027) with silver ink 

Add a spider cut using a sizzix die.

I've just found an istencil (02-00017), it looks like blood drips and blood splatter, 

guess what I'm off to play with!!

13 Socking it to Voodoo

Loved yesterdays messy paint and ink splattering project by Jas, the final pages  sent shivers down my spine!!  Loving the disclaimers too!!  Thanks Jas.

Today I thought I'd introduce to my Voodoo Sock Doll.  

The Materials

1 pair white socks

1 teabag

1 bowl of hot water

scissors

needle & thread or sewing machine

craft stuffing/old socks/ anything suitable for stuffing

button for an eye

embroidery thread

scrap red fabric, cut into a heart shape.

The Instructions

Put the teabag in a bowl of hot water, add a pair of white socks, soak for about 20 mins, rinse and hang out to dry.  I kept the teabag in the bowl, it gives a more uneven colour change.

Once dry, lay out the socks as shown above, with the heel in the centre facing up.

Sock 1 (top one here) cut the ankle rib off just above the heel, then cut in half as shown, this makes the arm.  Discard the rest of this sock.

Sock 2 (bottom one) from the top of the sock cut hrough the centre to the heel, this creates the legs.  The rest of the sock becomes the head and body.

Turn all sock pieces inside out. Next stitch the arms, making a tube, leaving a gap at the top to add the stuffing and then turn back inside out so you have the right side facing. (as above)

Stitch around the feet and legs of sock 2 to make the legs, I left a gap where the legs meet to allow for adding stuffing.  Turn sock right way round. (see above)

NOTE: I used my sewing machine for this bit of sewing but hand stitching will be good too.  From this point on all other stitching is done by hand.

I stuffed the top of the sock to make the head and secured it with an old hair band (as above) but the head was really floppy so I changed my approach, I got so engrossed in my doll making I forgot to take my photos, so I apologise and hope my instructions are enough of a guidance.

So back to the stuffing, I stuffed the head and neck area first.  The head took the first 1/3 of the sock, with the remaining section reserved for the body.  I did not anticipate so much stretching once I started stuffing her, so you will need to bear this in mind. (Ref to final picture of my doll against a spare similar sock).  Note the sock heel is her bum bit and makes for easy sitting.

I then stuffed the legs before finishing off with the body.  I recommend you shape the doll (neck area especially) as you are stuffing cos its a bit more difficult once she is all stitched up, I tried and ripped some of her stitches, poor girl, so had to do some repair work, fortunately, the naive look is what we are after!!

Once she is completely stuffed, arms too, its time to sew her up.  I hand stitched the gap between her legs with a simple over-stitch, and used the running stitch a few times to attach her arms.  Think about where her arms are going and how they will sit before attaching them.  Safety pins would work for the arms too if you are fed up of stitching by now!!

Now to personalise.  I have attached a button and stitched a large X in thick black embroidery thread for the eyes and the mouth is backstitched using the same thick black embroidery thread.

I attached the red heart fabric, which was also tea dyed with large random straight stitch.

You could paint or draw on these features.

Here she is against a similar sock used to make her, as you can see she has grown quite a bit.

10 Chalking up the Coffins

Loved yesterdays project from Jas and what a great giveaway from Rebecca.

Todays little project can be completed in under 1 hour once you have gathered all your supplies and it involves mixing up your own chalkboard paint.  Oh the possibilities!!

Supplies:
22cm x 11.5 cm thick chipboard or mountboard
5.5cm x 5cm thick chipboard
1 teaspoon Grout powder
8 teaspoons BLACK acrylic paint
102cm wire, I used thin garden wire
5 x Small bats, I cut mine with my sizzix die.
5 x Sticky Dots
5 x small circles.

Instructions: 

This is my template, I took a DL envelope folded it in half and eyeballed it!!  I have marked on the measurements if you want to follow it.

This is the coffin cut from chipboard,mine was a bit flimsy, I suggest you use a sturdier base.

To make your CHALKBOARD paint, MIX 1 part grout : 8 parts acrylic paint, you don't need very much hence my suggestion in the list to use teaspoons!!

Apply 2 coats of Chalkboard paint, allow the first coat to dry, it only takes a few minutes.

Next cut the wire into 6 x 17cm pieces.  Attach the bats to 5 of them, I used glue dots.

Next take the 5.5cm x 5cm piece of card, cover one side with double sided sticky tape, attach the bats on wire, bent as desired and using the last piece of wire, make a hanger.  I applied double sided sticky tape over the top to help secure the wire.

NOTE: The sticky tape side will face the front of the coffin.

Attach to the back of the coffin.



Rub chalk all over the coffin to 'season' it, wipe the chalk away, its now ready to use.
